What for? It's important to get inbound links to your website to get a higher ranking in google. Finding quality places to add your website address is tedious and time consuming, so why not put it on auto pilot using your goggle alerts? The alerts function goes out and searches for content on the web that you are interested in and delivers it to your email box. Why not use some of the keywords of your website content that help your clientele find you, in the alerts?. For example, as a web and graphic designer, I added "custom web and graphic design" to my alerts, "holistic web design" and "holistic graphic design".

I did this but will admit that I went a bit overboard and had the alerts set to arrive whenever something was found, and was annoyingly bombarded by alerts every minute or two. So, I went back and set it to once a week. At this point, I can check out what websites were found and do a bit of marketing for myself by adding my website link to the sites that google alerts found. Most of them were related blogs, which allow comments including your website address. Pretty cool huh?

I was forwarded on an email from Elizabeth, who was in contact with a woman who took some real photos of fairies. Do you believe in fairies? I do. My friend told me Shannon from www.TheMagdaleneAwakening.com went out with a friend in her backyard and the beach and chanted "Fairies, Fairies, Fairies" over and over again until the showed up. Looks like they did!

Custom Carrot Cake Baker in West Palm Beach and how to use meta tags on a webpage

titled DocumentI found out this weekend that one of my local clients is at the top of google for “carrot cake in west palm beach”. I thought that was pretty cool to know. It means I chose the right phrases for her meta tags, although meta tags are not really all they are cracked up to be, they work pretty well for local markets.

My friend and web design client Roxanne invited me over for a delectable lunch at her house this weekend and I met her friend Janet there. We talked about all sorts of things but it came up that Roxanne was searching for certain phrases in google to see if her website would come up. She was delighted to find she was first for “carrot cake in West Palm Beach”.

Meta tags are not everything, but if your target market is pretty localized, it’s a really good thing to use the right phrases in the website code to get you to come up where you need to be. The title tag is important. This is the tag that will show up in the reverse bar of someone’s browser when they go to your page and it helps to put your key phrases in there. Here is Roxanne’s title tag and probably how she got the number one spot for carrot cake in West Palm Beach.

So whenever someone is looking for custom made carrot cakes for a wedding or event, Roxanne comes up on the first page of google. This phrase is also repeated on the webpage so it’s a double whammy!

The description code is important as well. Here is Roxanne’s description tag for her products page.

<meta name="description" content="Roxanne bakes delicious cakes for private parties and weddings and also wrote a children's book, plus much more...." />

I won’t go into the key word tags, since from what I have read, the search engines don’t even read them anymore. Personally, I put them in there just in case since old habits die hard. Here is her keyword tag.

The title and description tags of a webpage are not as important as they used to be, but they do help. One of the best ways to get a higher ranking in the search engine is really just to have good, descriptive content. Another is having lots of inbound links from other relevant websites pointing to your website pages. So, if Roxanne had her website link on www.allrecipes.com or www.cooks.com, or even the The Breakers in West Palm Beach, since she is local, she would get a higher ranking in the search engines. It’s more about promoting your website than using the right keywords, but it does help and Roxanne’s website is an example of this.

So try it, google “carrot cake in West Palm Beach” and see what comes up…

By the way, the cake really is that good, as you can see from the pics from our garden lunch.

Dowsing and New Projects for Web Design

I have to say, I meet the most interesting people and ideas during my career as a graphic and web designer. Since I tend to specialize in holistic businesses, I get exposed to all kinds of different people and techniques.

Today, I met with a new client in his office to redesign and simplify his raw food website…www.RawFoodLlife.com. In an effort to be fair to both parties and come to an agreement on work and payment, my client took out his trusty dowsing rod to get answers to our project. I thought it pretty cool. As we were talking, he dowsed the whole conversation. I guess we came to a good agreement since he seemed happy with the result. He then used the dowsing rod on me and concluded I have very strong energy, especially in my third eye....they don't call me Third Eye Studio for nothing...

What exactly is dowsing? From what I seen of it, it is using a pendulum, a stick, or a rod to divine answers to questions or find to objects or water. Apparently, this tool connects us to the unconscious mind to find. Here is a good article on dowsing…

Everybody has their own set of tools to get answers and make the right decision. I like to use astrology and intuitive cards to keep me on the right track and do things at the correct time. I find using your intuition a very practical skill that more people should access. It is there for everybody and just makes your days a little bit easier.

Feng Shui decorating cure for my living room...tips for better Chi.

Mostly, my one bedroom, one bath apartment has good Chi...people that come to my place feel comfortable and tend not to want to leave. But, there is always room for improvement and my living room fit the bill. I use the book, "Move your Stuff, Change your Life", as the feng shui bible. It works for me since it is so simple and easy to implement...yes, the branch Karen Rauch Carter uses is a newer feng shui, but it is based on the ancient principles and you know, those asians are smart.

To start, you had to kind of walk over and around a couch and tv to enter my apartment, not good feng shui. The door is the mouth where the chi enters your home, so it should not be obstructed. Why didn't I move everything sooner? Well, the electrical outlet didn't work on the wall near the door so it had to be that way, but this was remedied a few months ago, suppose that is another interesting symbolism...

Here are some before pictures...by the way, I am self employed and work from my home so good feng shui chi is important for generating wealth and that much needed cash flow!

The picture above is the view when you walk in the door, notice the couch sticking out and the tv blocking the way. Your entry way corresponds to the career area of your life, so there should be no obstructions.

This is another before picture...and my work area. It's kind of zig zaggy and behind me was a wicker shelf with all my old artwork on it, not organized at all!

Tearing it up! I moved the couch near the wall facing the door....good placement since you are supposed to see whoever enters your home. I also got rid of the artwork shelf and said goodbye to old works I didnt like too much. The most important and least thing you can do for youself via feng shui is to de - clutter and get rid of things you do not use anymore...it holds energy and throwing it out releases it.

The new view to my apartment, notice the clear view, no obstructions. Also notice I strategically placed the fish tank and my water fountain there. The career area of the bagua corresponds to the color black and the element water...so water features are great here.

Moocher knows positive feng shui when she sees it...that couch top is now her new home. Nice clear and opened room. This area of the bagua corresponds to health. I intended good health by jazzing it up with the red rug. The element is earth, fire, metal, triangular stuff, the color red. The book suggested not to place wooden items here but there was no place else for the table. So, I balanced it out by placing my little triangle purple pyramid, a Himalayan salt lamp and a candle. I also hung a little crystal off of the ceiling fan.

My new workspace, right in the helpful people and travel section. Not bad...it was in the creativity section before. This was a good place since as a designer, I use creativity on a regular basis. But, I also depend on referrals for repeat business AND I did pump up the creativity area by neatly stacking my organized artwork in that area, and placing my silver lamp and metal bike. The element and color that correponds to that area is silver and metal.

All of this took me about a day and a half because I threw out so much. I kind of figured I would have a healing crisis from making a big change all at once, energetically, and I did. I have been suffering from allergy and asthma attacks since I stirred up all that dust and cat hair...my lungs couldnt take it. I feel good today with the windows wide open though.

A curious thing DID happen this week...possibly from more chi flowing into my home. The money and prosperity area of the bagua is located in my bathroom. Thanksgiving day I was brushing my teeth getting ready to meet up for a feast and my sink just bubbled up with black filthy old water, out of the blue. I did nothing out of the ordinary except keep the water running....bad me. The drain was slow running prior and this forced me to take the plunger to it and now the drain runs free and clear.

It's only been a week since I made this change to my chi. All I can say is I feel happier and peaceful in my space and thoughts create reality!

Video Editing for YouTube and websites

I edited a video for an Energy Healer in Palm City....what fun! I used to turn away video editing jobs because when I have had a request, it was when I only had one computer, my desktop, and these video files are so huge you really can't do anything else when the file is conforming in premier pro, so I didnt think it was worth it. But, around the beginning of the year I bought a laptop, and I also have have a portable hard drive...making it possible for me to do video editing.

Sky emailed me to see if I knew anybody who could do the work, and that person happend to be me! I forgot how much fun it is to do these things, adding music and custom graphics....etc.

Carrot Cake Cupcakes and feeling appreciated

I just finished up a website for a client, who does lots of things, including making fantastic looking and tasting bakery goods. I was working on the products section of the site and got so hungry reading the cake descriptions I went down to TooJays and bought a chocolate brownie, which of course, I gobbled up and felt sick for three hours afterwards....but, it was worth it, and so tasty!

Why it's important to pay your creative contractor on time (graphic and web designer for me!)

1. Creativity thrives on a relaxed state. Not recieving compensation for the work completed keeps a designer in survival mode. We can't be creative if we are spending our time worrying about paying bills.

2. The time we spend chasing money owed to us is time we could be using to brainstorm ways to get you more business!

3. Not being paid on time means we have to take on more projects to stay ahead, which means we rush. Rushing usually means we are not at our best and mistakes are made. It also means we take longer to finish projects because we need to the money, so we overbook!

4. We don't feel valued when we are the last person you feel you have to pay. You become the last person on our list the next time you need a website change or a print ad done yesterday!

5. We do this work full time and depend on cash flow to stay in business.

6. Although I love what I do, it is what I do to pay rent and buy groceries...its not a hobby, it's a business and needs to be treated as one.

7. The dotcom bubble burst years ago. Internet workers don't work for free anymore to "get more work" or have something notable to show in our portfolios. Most of us have years of experience and don't need to work for free to get more work.

8. YOU are stopping the flow of more money coming into your life by not paying your bills. It's a lack of faith saying you don't believe more money will be coming in so you need to keep what you have. Open the flow and watch what happens!

I did a YogaThon at Yoga and Inner Peace in Lake Worth, Florida this Saturday. The benefit was to raise money for Cancer for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. I did 100 rounds of sun salutations...WOW! I probably could have done more, but got a little hungry. I don't I have ever done that many sun salutations continuously. It was like the boot camp of Yoga.

Desktop Sharing for viewing design projects remotely

I have been thinking about this for awhile...how can I made edits to design projects quickly and easily without waiting days to go back and forth with clients who live far away? I have had the local ones drop by and we have done projects right with them there...and it works out pretty well. There are no questions on how long something took, what I was doing during the time, and no miscommunication. How in the world can I do this with clients that live four states away, or just four towns away? I tested this website out last night and it works pretty well...

Since I have a laptop and a desktop which are not networked, I sent out an invite to my email from the laptop to the desktop, opened up the view remote pc section and watched me open up files from the laptop...now how cool is that?

I think this is going to work great to collaborate on projects and cut down on the edit time. I also think it will be good for them to see what it is I actually do. Alot of people tend to think design is just moving stuff around and making it look pretty...you gotta pick out pictures, have an eye for it and be creative as well!

I think as long as clients have a fast internet connection and computer this should work...oh yeah, skype as well! Free remote desktop viewing and free voiceover...

We all need money and with the economy being down and it being summer...every little bit helps...oh yeah, the more successful my clients are, the more successful I am...so, watch and get in the money and success groove... FYI...this guy is a little goofy looking and sounding...but if you just try and visualize him as a leprechaun with a bag of gold coins it works really well!

Website Redesign of Third Eye Studio

Since I am a moonlighting astrologer, I took the June mercury retrograde period to redesign my website. I converted the whole site to css, changed the background color/wallpaper to a cool purple, and made the content pages a pretty light blue. Oh yeah, I added music to all the pages...hope you like music!

Some new pages I added were for printing....Printing at Third Eye Studio. Pricing guidelines for website, graphic design, and logo designs were added. In astrology, mercury retrograde times are best used to review, re-edit, re-think, and re-do...so I like to use these times to redo my own website. Most of the time I end up re-doing clients work or sites, but as long as the time is used wisely...

Hair Coloring is a VISUAL ART...hair color mistake by me...

Ok, this weekend I made a grave mistake with my hair. I have been doing my own color for two years now. I like it dark red, but took some friends advice that I might look better with it toned down and lighter. So I took the advice. I colored it light auburn with some blond highlights. After two months of this, I decided I liked my hair the way it was originally, dark red.

Go back to the hair color do it yourself me. I was feeling a bit annoyed at myself for listening to someone else about my hair color so I defiantly marched up to the Drug Store and snatched the box of color I used to use. I forgot one important element. Lightened hair and dark red hair color makes for interesting results, really interesting, like Ronald McDonald. I tried "fixing" it with highlights but that made the problem worse because the highlights came out orange.

I fit right in at the concert I went to that night and had two people compliment me on my hair...but the kicker was the next day in daylight. I met up with a friend and she asked me if I was wearing a wig. I was horrified.

Its better now...a bit faded plus the brown fanci full works wonders...

I decided to get the creative juices flowing and paint a few pairs of jeans a friend of mine gave me...it was nice to be creative and not in front of the computer for a change, although it took me awhile to get used to paint drying before you start on the next layer. New Spirit Farm Logo

The New Spirit Farm logo was a collaboration between me and illustrator Patricia Adams. Erica wanted a very detailed and illustrative horse and Patricia took off running with the finishing touches. We were all pretty happy with the resulting logo.

Here is a project I just did yesterday. A new client who is an actor/model wanted a headshot made from a picture he took. I had to take out the background and very carefully cut away some of the background you could still see through his hair. I softened it up by using the feather tool in photoshop and added some black parts in layers because his collar was cut away too much...check it out...

I have been meaning to do this for awhile and finally got around to putting up my astrology website. I have been studying and using astrology in business and in my life since 1999 and finally decide to step up to the plate and consider myself a professional in the field...heck, I give readings to my friends and family all the time...why not take myself seriously with it?

Third Eye Studio Current & Recently Completed Projects

With the fall, the energy seems to be moving forward again and people are thinking of putting their stamp on the world and telling everybody about what they do and how they do it. Of course, that is where I come in...to help them get a nice looking website up, create an eye-catching and unique logo or get more people to notice them. This month and possibly running over to the next, I am going to be designing a local pottery artist's website, Earth Artists Clay Studio, who is actually one of my neighbor's who I see in the park almost every morning. She does beautiful functional clay art and wants to expand to the internet.

I am also going to be designing a website for a local intuitive named Joseph LoBrutto...am looking forward to it because he wants some animation, which I enjoy.

I just finished up Karen Talcott's "Hearing Your Angels" website. Karen does intuitive angel readings and angel therapy...as you can see...I just love the healing arts and fun clients! Check out her newly created website, by me...

I go for walks around my neighborhood all the time...gets me out of the house and a break from being in front of the computer, give me a new perspective...blah blah blah...The thing is, each time I go for a spin...I am appalled at the amount of garbage and crap that people throw out the window or just toss wherever they are....gross. How's about taking a nice little break outdoors to see wrappers, beer bottles, napkins...whatever. Doesn't anybody care? I swear, I do try and pick up trash when I see it, but there is so much it would take me all day to clean up the park I live near. Are there any littering laws?

My thought was...why not create a local website where once a month the local neighborhood gets together and spends the day picking up the trash? Heck, I have no problem making something like this if someone else could be the coordinator...maybe have pics of before the clean up and afterwards?

Last night as I sat near the water, I was pretty happy except when I looked at the discusting brown color of the water...shall we name our waterway "The Anal Coastal", rather than the inner coastal?

Just a little note to let ya'll know some of the new projects I am working on. The first is a website for New Spirit Farm..."The Farm in the City". It won't be completed for about a week or two, but I am having fun with it.

On another note, I am going to be helping out the famous "Dancing Renee", well, sort of famous, around here, as the dude that goes to all the local concerts and video tapes himself dancing happily around the stage. He does splits and cartwheels. I am helping him with his video clips, myspace pages and getting a video podcast up and running. I met him on Tuesday night when I went to go see my friends band play and he was doing his thing. The clips crack me so this should be a fun project too...check out his website at Dancing Renee

I experienced something like this last week when someone emailed me a set of design criteria and a note saying "Happy Designing" at the end of it...when I emailed back and asked more about the project...I got an answer after three or four cagey replies that they wanted me to do two "preliminary" designs to see if my style matched what they were looking for. I directed them to my website stating the samples on there easily show my style and capabilities. Well, I never heard from them again and have to say I am ok with that. Heck, the time I would spend doing "preliminary" work where I would probably never hear from them again is the time I could either be doing work for current honest and nice clients, marketing myself...or going for a walk in the park!

I thought I would share, even though this isn't really art or design related...Some of you may have watched

"The Secret"

...the movie all about manifesting the things and situations in your life just by becoming aligned and getting excited about these things...I really do believe your thoughts create your reality and if you can combine it with emotion...well, if you think good things, good things can happen, and vice-versa.

A like minded friend of mine were sitting down for a drink and were talking about manifesting...and we just decided then and there to start saying good things about each other...and really believing it and getting into it too. I am sure we sounded pretty stupid to the people next to us...but who cares? We spent the next hour, saying good things about each other...saying how awesome the other was...how good jobs and money were coming, how great we looked...etc. Both of us couldn't help but laugh too...'cause it was kind of ridiculous...but coupled with strong emotion...now isn't laughter a strong emotion? Did it work...well, the dude sitting next to us bought me a drink...I was about ready to pay and he said he would take care of it. How about that? Anything else? I got a few unsolicited compliments on my work..

Maybe I should start a meetup.com group where everybody just takes turns talking about how awesome the other person is and then you wait and act on the good things that come...

I had someone ask me this, and thought I would post an edited version...

- Search engine optimization...this is getting a lot of relevant text on your website so the search engines can spider it...just put a lot of text on your site relating to your work...your clients can decide whether or not to read it, but at least they found your site!!!

- Get yourself a blog and use it....blogs are hot!

- Podcasts!

- Go onto relevant forums and start talking to people...make sure you have a link going to your website on your signature so if people are curious they can look you up!

- YouTube.com and other video sites...post it on your blog while you are at it.

- Use all the free directories you can find.

- email newsletters

- make sure your class schedule is on your website, if you have classes.
